What kind of hardware is required for projecting surtitles with the application?
The usual setup includes: a) The pc b) A projector. The projector is connected to the pc, usually on a VGA output that the computer must have available (most modern laptops come with one by default). For the connection a VGA cable is needed.
How are captions shown on the projector screen?
By utilizing the "multiple desktop" capability of the Microsoft Windows operating system, we can achieve the following operation: SuperTitles application is run in the primary desktop, so the user accesses it on the computer monitor.. A secondary desktop which holds nothing else but a panel, is used to be output to the projector. The panel on this desktop holds the actual text viewed by the audience.
How does the user synchronize titling during the performance?
Inside the application window, the users sees the text of the performance in the actual language that it is played on the scene, as well as with the translated text that is projected for the audience. The text is broken into rows inside a table, with every row containing a phrase (a caption) in one column and the translation of it in the other. Each moment only one row is selected in the table and the user can change the selection with a simple keystroke. During this operation, the user can control if the caption to be projected to the audience is actually visible or not. So, while on scene, the actors say their words, the user synchronizes with them and simply he promotes to the subsequent rows of the table. In case of a mistake made by the actors, the user can instantly hide (make non-visible) the caption and quickly find the right row, in order to show them again.
Is it possible to edit text after having imported it in a project?
Of course! All kinds of editing is supported, either for single captions (editing, deleting or modifying a single cell in the table), or text-wide editing like moving, deleting or changing the appearence of portions of text. Along with these full text searching is supported, seeking of ling lines etc. Finally the text can be exported at any time to a .txt file for further editing and imported back to the application afterwards.
What about text formatting? What kind of font attributes are supported?
Captions are drawn on the text panels using the fonts that are installed on the system. Thus, all sizes and faces are available, and color can be used as well. Further more font attributes like bold or italics can be used (with simple HTML tags). Also, letters can be drawn outlined and with a shadow. Finally, text can be justified in all ways, and be aligned inside the panels.
Is it possible to project translation to more than one languages?
Yes it is! For every column with translated text in the table, you can create a corresponding panel that with show the text of this column. Panels are placed on the secondary desktop and can be properly aligned to be projected in a useful position. Furthermore, if the system supports multiple monitors (perhaps using multiple graphics adaptors), the multpiple desktops can be used, connected to different projectors.
Is it possible to project titles over a specific background or a video overlay?
Yes. Given that the picture (or the video overlay) is controlled by the same computer and is shown on the secondary desktop, we can use a transparent text panel. So, using outlined fonts, or shadowed ones, the captions will be projected on top of this background. Of course we can also use solid panels for hiding a section of the background.
Can the application project titles automatically using a predefined timing?
Yes. On occasions where the performance (or presentation) is played in an automated way (eg a DVD or cinema movie, or a multimedia presentation), the application can project the surtitles automatically, given that a timetable will be created beforehand. This time table is created by recording all the moves of the user in an earlier time within the same application. It's like making a full performance and recording the result.
Can someone utilize ready-made subtitles for an event?
Yes. In case of a movie for which subtitles already exist in an .SRT format (SubRip), then this file can be imported to the application, so a timetable will be constructed and the captions will be put in the table. SRT format is very popular, and there are utilities for converting from other formats to this.
Is the program useful for creating subtitles for movies or other films?
Yes. This is a side-function of the SuperTitles application. Times recorded in the timetable, can be exported along with the text to an .SRT file, so anycone can use it later for further use in subtitling a movie.
What different versions exist for the SuperTitles application?
The application comes in four different versions.
- Trial version - A version for evaluation reasons, to get to know SuperTitles functionality. There are some restrictions, but all functions are available.
- Performance version - A version that behaves just like trial version. except when a special code is applied, which is valid for a restricted time (the duration of performance normaly). This code can be used once. You purchase the codes online by our webpage.
- Subtitling version - A restricted version for just reading/editing/producing subtitle files. No projecting is available.
- Full version - The mighty full version of the program.
